WALKS AROUND KETTON

Ketton has some excellent opportunities for walking. The following are some suggested walks, all beginning from the church.

WALK 1: AROUND NORTHERN KETTON

Distance: 1.25 miles

This walk combines footpaths and roads to complete a circuit around the northern part of the village.

  1. Start at the church in Church Road and walk up the hill past The Railway pub.

  2. At the junction with the main road, cross over by Hibbins House and take the track to the right of the house into The Green. Go through The Green and take the footpath at the end, bearing right behind the back of a new development of houses. Follow the footpath until it meets Hunt's Lane.

  3. At Hunt's Lane turn left out of the village and then take the path to the right skirting the edge of a field. Follow this around the field edge until you get to the stile at 4.

  4. Go over the stile in the hedge and go on to the track running up from Home Farm. Cross over this and take the track leading into the woods. There is a pedestrian access to the right of the metal gate. You are now entering into the nature reserve of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. Continue on the track leaving the farm buildings to your right.

  5. Follow the track to the right at the end of the main farm buildings and then go left through the wood towards a wooden gate. Go through this and you now enter an area of old quarry workings, now returned to grassland. Rare breeds of sheep are sometimes grazes on the slopes. Continue up the track.

  6. At the highest point continue on the main track and through a kissing gate to the right of the main gate. Continue on the track as it drops down towards Pit Lane.

  7. At Pit Lane, cross over and turn right, following the pavement down the hill. The cement works dominates the view on your left.

  8. At the junction with the main road, turn left following the footpath towards Stamford. Ketton Grange is on your right on the opposite side of the road.

  9. When you get to the main entrance to the cement works, cross over the road and take the track down towards the River Chater. After about 150 meters, bear right on the footpath. On your right is the lake which was formed for the gardens of Ketton Grange.

  10. Cross over the Victorian stone bridge and turn right. Follow the footpath and then take the main track, climbing up the slope to the top of the field. Take care as there may be horses around.

  11. Once at the top you get a good view over Ketton and the Chater valley. At the end of the field, take the footpath between the hedge and the electric fence. This leads out into Aldgate. Follow the track.

  12. When you get to the junction with the tarmaced road, turn right and follow the road down the hill with the terrace row of cottages on your right.

  13. Continue straight on at the road junction and then bear right following the road round towards Aldgate Farm, now Buckland House, which will appear on your right.

  14. Cross over the footbridge over the River Chater and continue on the footpath running by Sinc Stream.

  15. Either take the footbridge, or stepping stones, into Hall Close park and continue on, keeping the park equipment to your left. At the end skirt by the right of the former workhouse and then bear right into Redmiles Lane. Follow the lane up past the farm which will be on your left.

  16. When you get to the passage with the footpath sign, take this, turning right and follow the passage down into Chapel Lane. Continue on to Church Road and then left to the church, or follow the footpath into the churchyard.
